Traditional Yoruba Hairstyles

Updated: May 24, 2019

There are three major ethnic groups in Nigeria and it is one of the countries we chose to talk about. The women are very creative when it comes to style, fashion, beauty, and hair.

The Traditional Significance of Yoruba Names

Each hairstyle has a significant name that represents many things such as:

  • royalty

  • war

  • places

  • emotion

  • spiritual thoughts

  • religion

  • youth

  • marriage

  • social status

  • sophistication

  • social commentary

Traditional Styling Implements

Believe it or not these types of hairstyles are actually very simple to make.

  • "Oya: a wooden comb with three teeth that come in various sizes."

  • "Local hair cream: traditionally used for braided styles."

  • "Plastic plaiting threads: used for braiding and weaving."

Shuku

The Shuku hairstyle is made by braiding to form a bump on top of the head and it is one of the most popular Yoruba hairstyle used know. Because of its popularity people have remodeled it and made their own variations of this popular style. The hairstyle was traditionally meant for wives of royalty, but is very common now.

Ogun Pari

The words "Ogun Pari" literally mean "end of war."The hairstyle was created to commemorate the end of the Nigerian Civil War. The natural hair is divided into large sections and plastic plaiting thread is used to make long, thin braids. The braids are then bent into large arches, connecting the thin tops to the bottom of near braids.

Dada

The Dada hairstyle depicts the person using this style spiritually and is associated with the Olokun clan. They let their hair grow long into dreadlocks and would not touch them or style them from a early age because they believed that long and natural hair had religious significance. If they disobey these rules and cut the child´s hair the child will get bad luck and cause sickness, or death!
